Spectrum isn't a replacement for Slack

April 10, 2019 at 8:16am (Edited 3 months ago)

I'm not a fan of Slack but they're not the same thing. They're not even similar.

Slack is a chat. You can ask a short question, see if anyone can help you and then explain more. On Spectrum you start a thread and wait for someone to see it and maybe answer. It's just a forum with very limited functionality.

I really miss the Apollo Slack channel. Often the challenge with development is not knowing the right question to ask, chatting helps overcome this.

I'm hanging out on GraphQL Slack, Prisma's Slack channel and VueLand #graphql channel on Discord, but miss the one dedicated to Apollo.

You can still chat in #General, or #Random, or whatever channel, and figure out exactly what it is you want to ask and then post a more complete question in a specific channel. Spectrum offers us discoverability (history and search engine indexing!) and better threading.

This is exactly why I love spectrum. It is not casual chat. It really helped community to standardize communication patterns. On slack people will often ask very generic question and do not provide enough info to resolve problem and go offline. Spectrum forces to write about the problem carefully and it is easy to recall some conversations as well. Author can also track response etc.
