Do you plan to make money off of Buttercup?November 18, 2017 at 3:47pm
I'm curious, do you have any plans to make money off of Buttercup somehow? Maybe with a shared account so I don't have to sync my data manually? (similar to 1Pwd) Or maybe teams or something?

We do have a business plan, yes. Buttercup will eventually have a paid platform/service under its belt, so we can market it as a security solution to business. There are a lot of competitors in this space, but we're confident that our offering will be unlike what's already on offer. Hosted password archives will be the center-point of this, along with team/hierarchical sharing and file encryption (keys etc.).
The current applications and features will remain free of course. The current suite will not have any paid features, but will all support tight integration with the Buttercup service that will come eventually :D
Since you've been working on it for two years (I assume in your free time?) how long do you think until you're ready to go for the business behind it?
How much is left to do, so to speak?
Yeah, we've been doing Buttercup on top of our day jobs.. It's definitely a challenge to move it forward in some places, mostly due to how demanding it is time-wise. Ideally within the next 12 months we'd be making some kind of income from our service. The development may take around 6 months at best, giving us a few months to get ourselves some customers..
Most of the hosted platform is left.. Design, architecture etc.. So there's substantial work there. Hopefully we get it out in good somewhere in 2018.. we'd both love to leave our jobs and work full time on Buttercup 👌
We've also got our open collective account going (https://opencollective.com/buttercup) to raise funds for the basic items - hosting, DNS, email, dev accounts, code signing, etc.
The donations we receive are helping us keep the OSS side of things stable and, maybe eventually, might end up paying for some development work in that area as well. Ideally our company would be earning enough that we could have some full-time work on the open-source side of things.. but hopefully that follows 😊
