Video Embed

April 16, 2019 at 8:44am
It would be great if instead of a feature image, you could add a youtube/vimeo embed to replace the image and highlight. Users stay on page to watch. Could then be a serious way to curate youtube videos as collections. #feature request

Here is the custom plugin I had made which works with Chipmunk. Worth a try if you want to use. https://bit.ly/2PZG003 But yeah, would be super to just have it included and work as an option with the original theme. I appreciate the theme though .... well coded, really fast loading.

Hey David. I was able to install the plugin and test it out but i'm having an issue with how the posts show up on the home page. Instead of showing the picture for each post, the video gets embedded and there is a gap that appears above the video as well.
I've taken screenshots of the issue here https://imgur.com/a/lxoFOhg
This also happens when the embed is a soundcloud link. On your website ELTbuzz, the video embeds are not included on the main/category pages, only in individual post pages. On the main pages that list all the resources only post images/thumbnails should show up. I want to make this work for my site as well but it looks like ill need to make a customization somewhere.
I think this would be a really useful feature to add to the theme so that we don't have to use these extra plugins to make it work.

That looks more like a loading issue. Have you tried selecting the featured image generated manually when posting the resource?

Hi guys,
This plugin works well with the theme: https://pl.wordpress.org/plugins/featured-video-plus/ I don't want to add too many features to the theme if that's easy to do with a plugin because the theme will soon become hard to manage and develop further.
If you want to fix the gap issue, please add this to your Customize -> Visuals -> Custom CSS:
.resource__media .featured-video-plus,
.tile__image .featured-video-plus {
position: absolute;
top: 0;
bottom: 0;
left: 0;
right: 0;
-o-object-fit: cover;
object-fit: cover;
font-family: "object-fit: cover;";
}
.resource__media .fluid-width-video-wrapper,
.tile__image .fluid-width-video-wrapper {
height: 100%;
}
Cheers, Piotrek

I reinstalled the plugin from the link above. I also added the custom css which fixed the gap issue. However I discovered another gap issue when viewing the individual post url in mobile resolution, the embedded video has extra padding on the right or is being pushed to the left.
Here is a screenshot of the issue: https://imgur.com/a/gPtwABF

I have gone ahead and updated the code but now the video is missing on normal desktop resolution. Also dont see a video on mobile. The only time the video shows up is when i resize browser on desktop to the smallest size. I am going to DM you a link and password for my site.

Looks like you've added some additional CSS code that prevents the video from displaying: https://www.dropbox.com/s/kvbeo5cd1hp5mnz/Screenshot%202020-02-11%2010.06.25.png?dl=0

Removed the padding code for all three resolutions (980px, 680px and 490px) but still having layout issues with the video when viewing this link on mobile: https://1vibe.com/story/summer-walker-ft-usher-come-thru-video
Also now that the padding code has been removed normal posts with just an image have a large gap between post title and image: https://1vibe.com/story/music-hit-1-trillion-streams-in-2019-but-growth-is-slowing/

Can you create a new admin account for [email protected]? It would be easier to jump into the customizer and fix those issues for you.

Also I cant figure out how to change the size dimensions for the video that is replacing the image for each post. I looked into the wordpress media settings but couldn't find the solution.

Im also noticing that videos are showing up instead of thumbnails in the "related" section on individual post pages like this one https://1vibe.com/story/summer-walker-ft-usher-come-thru-video/ - you might have to refresh a few times because not all video posts have a video embed setup at the moment.

Hi, I've logged in and fix the styling issues. Here's a nice discussion on the image sizes:

As for the other issue (displaying video embeds in "Related" sections) - I can't help you with that. That's how this plugin works and while I'm ok with helping you fix a styling issues in Chipmunk I'm not planning to modify third party plugins.

I was able to get the thumbnails to show instead of the videos on the homepage + category pages like https://1vibe.com/category/videos/ by disabling the option "when inside the main query of each page OR". I don't think the plugin provides an option to do that for the "related" section since i think the first rule "when viewing single posts and pages OR" applies to both the post image + related section in single post pages. This one I can live with or figure out a solution later on.
However i'm still experiencing issues on iOS devices. These do not occur on Android. I've tested on several devices. For iOS i also tested on Safari + Chrome + Brave.
Here is what im seeing https://imgur.com/a/E6teuHW

Hey I know you must be busy but I really need to figure out if this issue can be resolved soon. It sucks because it works except on ios devices, which many ppl use these days so I can't overlook this bug. I know this is a plugin and that you are helping me out of good will and are not obligated to do so. But please understand where i'm coming from, I have literally pushed the launch of 1VIBE back by almost 1 year now. If you remember, we've been discussing version 1.12.0 since June 2019. This is really discouraging and draining my motivation for the project. As a dev yourself who has probably built many websites in the past, i'm sure you know this is not a good feeling to have.

Please try to replace the line 56 in templates/sections/resource.php in your child theme with this:
<?php if ( function_exists( 'has_post_video' ) && has_post_video( get_the_ID() ) ) : ?>
<span class="resource__media"><?php the_post_thumbnail( '660x354' ); ?></span>
<?php else : ?>
<a href="<?php echo esc_url( chipmunk_external_link( $resource_website ) ); ?>" class="resource__media" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"><?php the_post_thumbnail( '660x354' ); ?></a>
<?php endif; ?>
Hopefully it'll help with the issue. If not I'll try to come up with something else when I'm in the office on Monday.

I made sure to test on all these browsers for iOS: Safari, Chrome, Brave, Opera Touch. If you keep refreshing the page many times, there is the odd time where the video will load properly without the gap on the right. I'm not sure if that info helps at all but it's something I noticed.

thank you! What changes did you make to fix the gap? I've been trying to figure it out but I have not been able to.
Right now the "Related" section on pages like this one https://1vibe.com/story/summer-walker-ft-usher-come-thru-video/ is having the same gap issue when viewing the site on any mobile browser on iOS.
It would be best if the "Related" section only showed the post thumbnail image instead of the embed but I think you mentioned that for this I would need to modify the "Featured Video Plus" plugin. This is the last issue that I have to resolve before launch.
