#PassThePen - Home For The Holidays!

November 15, 2018 at 5:31pm (Edited 7 months ago)

Hey Friends! It's our last pen for the year of 2018! Can you believe a whole year is already coming to an end? Before we enter 2019 I wanted to get us all contributing to one last pen and what better theme than a Holiday theme!

All general rules are still the same, if you need a refresher be sure to check out https://codepen.io/KristopherVanSant/post/pass-the-pen

If you'd like to join in, simply comment below and be sure to read the "How to play" instructions linked to above.

We'll be passing the pen from one person to the next through comments in this thread. When it's your turn you'll be notified + given a link to the most recent version!

I'll also update this post continuously with the most recent version as it gets passed!

If you have any questions or are unsure what to contribute, simply ask and we'll be happy to help! :)

@linseyo I would still like to take the pen - I had a virus and have been catching up with a lot of things, but I now have some time so I could take it anytime in the next week or so! Has anyone else contributed yet?

Perfect! No one has taken it yet. I feel like this might be a minor bust just cause it’s the end of the year... I thought more people would contribute. But I still have hope!

Sorry your computer crapped out on you! But if you have time feel free to take it! :)

Oh it wasn't my computer, it was me :) (forgot computers get viruses too!)

It's a shame no-one else has contributed yet - let's hope...

@linseyo It seems like we're the only people on here at the moment :( I wonder what we should do?

Yeah. :( I guess either people are busy or they forgot. I was hoping people from Twitter would join in too but guess not. I'll leave it open until the end of the year as planned and see where it goes from there. T___T

Yeah it may just be the time of year, we'll just have to see what happens with this one. Looking ahead to next year, do you think we should come up with a plan to revitalise things?

Yeah, it's most likely just the time of year. I agree, I think we should regroup and think of a more streamline process. Learned a lot this year as far as how to incorporate new collaborators or how to keep things rollin' along.

I was actually thinking if we should try a Discord instead of spectrum or slack? It seems like not a lot of people use Spectrum and our Slack was good but not a lot of people had slack either. And with Spectrum, we had a lot of random conversations that have no relevance to Pass The Pen end up on our community.

We could try a Discord - I agree that the random conversations on Spectrum can be a bit of a distraction. When we first moved to Spectrum it did seem to increase the community's visibility, but I now feel that it might not really be working, though it's nice to have this presence within the CodePen community. I have a feeling that working up how to sign up for the Spectrum might be too complicated for people who discover us through social media. Do you think more people use Discord than Slack?

Yeah, regrouping and coming up with a streamlined process in the new year sounds good!

I'm not too sure where people are most active. Slack always just seemed more directed towards groups within companies, so I feel like having a Slack for a group like this seemed too formal? But the same could be said about Discord being more directed towards those who are more in tune with the gaming community.

But I do think the intensity of trying to figure out Spectrum might have deterred people.

Even in the regular Codepen chat here on Spectrum there isn't much activity going on. I think where we struggle most is visibility and accessibility.

Probably some people will always prefer one tool and others another... Personally, I don't have strong views either way, but I agree that Spectrum has a steeper learning curve and that might have deterred people. We could use more than one tool, but that might break up conversations and is definitely more work.

We could also make more use of Twitter - a lot of people are on it already and it might be more accessible if people didn't have to join a chat group to participate - but things can get rather lost on Twitter. I think we'd definitely want to keep a chat group for most discussion.
