On grading and processing times

June 11, 2018 at 1:00pm (Edited 3 years ago)
Hi all,
Today we have started sending out certificates for a batch of students who have completed the course. I'm sure this will inspire a number of questions about the grading.
How to get your certificate: In case we have been able to process and confirm all your answers, your certificate will be available at the top of the My profile page.
What if I didn't get an email/certificate: If you didn't get a message yet, there are a couple possible explanations:
  • check that you have given enough peer feedback on each of the peer evaluated exercises (Exercises 4, 15, 24, 25, 26): you should see the text "Thank you for reviewing your peers! If you have time to spare, give more reviews" below the exercise if this is done
  • after that, it will take a while before your answers receive enough feedback from other students
  • when your exercises have received enough peer feedback, it may turn out that some of your answers may have been flagged as problematic (or getting very low scores), in which case we'll check them manually, which takes a bit longer.
Also see "On peer reviews" below.
The grading criteria are as follows:
  • minimum 90% of exercises completed
  • minimum 50% of correctness
Correctness is calculated as the average correctness over all the completed exercises. (So each exercise has the same weight.) The text answers are counted as 100% correct assuming they are confirmed valid.
Exceptions: Exercises 3 ("Examples of tasks"), 17 ("Life expectancy and education (part 1 of 2)"), 20 ("Elements of a neural network") either had errors in the problem statement or they were found to be too vague and debatable, that they are not included in the grading at all.
On peer reviews: The free text answers that are peer evaluated will take some time to be processed because we need a sufficient number of reviews. Furthermore, we will manually verify any answers that get lower than average scores, which will take even more time. This is why many of you will have to wait for the grading and the certificates for an extended period of time.
On university credits: The processing of the ECTS credit units will be done after the certificate is made available. Due to the holiday season at the University student services, the credits will show up on the register at the end of July. (This applies to both those who have a University of Helsinki student number, and those who students who have a Finnish national identification number but are not students at the University of Helsinki – their credits will be handled by the Open University.)
We apologise for the delay and the inconvenience, but we these are official University of Helsinki credit units, and we take the validity of our certificates very seriously so that you can be very proud about earning them, even if it takes a bit longer.
I hope this answers many questions, and of course we'll be happy to answer more.
Congratulations to all who passed already and all who will do so in the future!
best wishes,
Teemu & the EoAI team
[edited June 15: A requirement for getting credits through the Open University is a Finnish national identification number, not being a Finnish resident.]
[edited June 21: Unfortunately, the holiday season of the University student services causes a break in registrations until the end of July.]
[edited June 22: Clarified the peer evaluation stages and emphasised that you need to submit enough peer feedback before your answers will be graded.]
[edited July 12: The text for submitted reviews updated after an upgrade of the course platform.]
