Pin text to another text layer

July 27, 2018 at 12:12pm
I'm trying to pin one text layer to the other, so when the first one's width change, second element would move. Is it possible to achieve this in Figma?

Instance auto-resize would be a very good feature to have because that is how HTML/CSS divs work. The parents dimensions change according to its children. I'm trying to have the card with a border auto-resize according to the description text inside.

This is unrelated to the original post but I thought it would be cool to share what we could achieve with the Stack trick.
I made an auto resize button using two invisible left padding and right padding rectangles, and a text in the middle.

Genius :D I would love this feature.
I'm trying to figure out what potential ways stacking could mistakenly complicate a designer's workflow.
Like what do you reckon the risks are for Figma to release this properly?

Thanks for secret tip, works great, I'm just not sure how it works with buttons, because the background doesn't seem to scale

For now I just use a background color on the Stack, but it's not as flexible as having an actual background layer which allows rounded corners and the use of styles.

Hey everyone I just wanted to reach out and communicate some things around this “secret stack” feature.
So, first of all this is something we played around with a while ago (before I started) which we may ship someday. We really didn’t expect anyone to find it and we’re quite impressed that you did. ;)
Secondly, and more importantly, we’re going to be turning this “hidden” feature off as it causes crashes and could also cause your documents to become corrupted. Because of this, we highly recommend to revert your use of these “stacks”, especially on real work.
Thanks for understanding. Let me know if you have any questions.

Josh, what is the status of an official solution to the problem? "Someday" is too vague. 2018? 2019? Not scheduled? This really is a pretty awesome problem to have solved.

sorry we're keeping it vague for now :) it's difficult to make this feature work in a consistent way with stuff we have planned and we're not going to commit to a date until we have figured out the right solution.

Thanks for the clarification. It really is an interesting solution to a problem many designers would love to solve. I look forward to seeing a better implementation of this feature landing in the product someday!

Yes, the way Framer X automates spacing and distribution with Stacks is great. This would save me a so much time I currently spend manually nudging things. https://youtu.be/QQ66FU-TYCw?t=1m44s

And this would require as well to break components in order to modify buttons inside or have duplicate components to accommodate different cases

It would be nice to have interactive components in general (not even stacked/constraints, but also some additional rules like media query breakpoints. So you could scale your root font for example for bigger instances, etc. Or change stacking from vertical to horizontal, etc)

Thanks for clarifying. Our team is also very much looking forward to see these features work in the future, making our already great experience in Figma even better.

Hi, I'm new here. Nice to discover this Figma community! I've been a Sketch user for 3 to 4 years. Since a couple of days trying out Figma and I'm already planning to SWITCH to Figma! So impressed so far with Figma. Anyway... To the Figma team: This 'secret' stack feature. Please please release this feature ASAP. It would be a very important feature. If you are into coding as well you will know how essential this feature is. UIStackView on iOS and Flexbox in CSS. Thanks! :)

currently working on a card grid with several vertically stacked text objects that the client insists be different row lengths on each instance and I would kill for this feature. Currently having to make components to make the grid, then break them so I can nudge everything around and going slowly insane
