What's happening during the "optimizing image" phase and how can I optimize it?

Error on `apps create`: open /me/project.com: is a directory

I followed the getting started speed run: https://fly.io/docs/speedrun/#start-your-speed-run-now and used the brew tap install method (which seems to install an older version). Maybe has to do with the . in the path. Version is 0.0.106.
