Design Systems Apprenticeship: UI Designer

July 14, 2018 at 3:05pm
GitHub has started an apprenticeship program called *Octoprenticeships*. Thes are six-month career development programs for people with non-traditional technical backgrounds from underrepresented groups in tech. Work on real projects with a GitHub Team, learn alongside a mentor in your field, and develop the skills you need to land your next dream job. The design systems team is looking for an apprentice UI Designer 🎉- apply here:

Requirements for applying:
1. You must be available for a full-time role for the six month period.
2. Your apprenticeship will last six months from October 2018 to March 2019.
3. You are located in the San Francisco Bay Area or in an area where GitHub has an office and/or strong presence.

I'm from Nigeria, can I apply?

I'm afraid not, as outlined in the requirements above, you need to be located in the San Francisco Bay Area or in an area where GitHub has an office and/or strong presence

Is Los Angeles one of the qualified areas?
Is there a deadline for the application?
Hello , can you specify where the GitHub offices are? San Francisco, NYC, etc.
Yes Los Angeles is fine!
We have offices in SF and Boulder; and coworking spaces in NYC, Atlanta, Portland, New Orleans, and Nashville. The states listed on this page should be okay for location too as that means we have GitHub employees there:
We will keep the role open until we fill it, but we expect to keep it open until about mid-August
Thank you! :)

Is there no way to accommodate me since I have the passion and Aldo willing to invest everything to scale through?

Hi Diana, how are you? I think I'm dealing with a bit of impostor syndrome here, even for an apprenticeship position, and would like to know more what background you're looking for. Thanks!

July 18, 2018 at 10:48pm
Hello, I will DM you!
Hi, it's not entirely up to me. This is the first time we're doing apprenticeships across the organization. We want to make sure people have a great experience, and to do that successfully we feel we should start with folks located in areas where they can meet other staff. You can still apply as the people running the program may consider another location, but I do think it's unlikely this first time around. If this round goes well, hopefully we'll be able to scale the program to other locations in future.

Hi Diana! I would like to know what sort of background GitHub is looking for as well. When will applications close? Thanks :)

Hi Diana! Thanks for posting this - it looks like an amazing opportunity! I’d love to know more about it to determine if I would be a good fit. Where could I find out more information? Thanks!

YES! I'm in the ATL, just applied, saw the posting in the WWC - Atlanta slack and Danielle Leong's Twitter timeline
I will try my best to wait patiently, fingers crossed!!
and if you are feeling impostor syndrome, I know how you feel...apply anyway, I did ;)

The job description describes the role we're looking for. It has fairly minimum requirements so that we encourage more applications from a wider variety of experience. Let me know if you have a specific question that the job description and discussion in this channel doesn't answer!
Heads up we will be closing applications for this role, end of day tomorrow. If you were thinking about applying, please do now!
