What is your approach to finding new opportunities for your product?

I was recently reading an article on Medium by Eugen Esanu in which he discusses ideas for uncovering unseen opportunities. He mentions two great ideas, one from Charlie Munger and one from Rory Sutherland.

  1. Think and solve in reverse. Instead of "how may we help?" think "how may we hurt?" Finding the opportunities to stay away from the things that will hurt your cause, product, etc.
  2. Test counterintuitive things. Sutherland states that when testing counterintuitive things you will discover small thing that have a large impact. That we pay more attention to the big things because the small things are counterintuitive.
I'd love to start a discussion around these points. Sharing our approaches and thoughts about discovering opportunities.

While we don't have a particularly extensive approach to this, one of the best things we do is have a large body of design work we can show people. These act as a way to engage potential/existing users in a discussion that often leads to our own "A-ha!" moments.

Regularly observing real customers/users using the product has had the best results for me.
