Wild thought! - Is a good UX making us lazy?November 30, 2018 at 1:56pm
I've read a bunch of articles out there that said, being a lazy person made them a better designer. I won't agree with them coz a good design is a science but not a gut feeling. However, that made me think, when we design, we design a product keeping the user and their needs in mind. So if we make it really easy for the user to achieve the goal or complete the task at hand. Is it making the users (us) lazy?
Just wanted to get everybody's ideas on this. What do you guys think?

I think not, it perhaps just opens space by deterring frustration and saving time, how people use that space is up to them. Lazy is a very psychological term, whose meaning is fairly misrepresented in everyday conversations.
The UX of starting a car now is to press a button, imagine if instead we had to open the bonnet, connect a portable battery to the starter, manually boot the ECU, then manually press a button to start the starter... I don't think anyone thinks that the absence of this makes them lazy
If anything, it's enabling, take for example that we post here, rather than Redit or a standard 2010 looking forum, Spectrum has a better UX.
This thinking would apply to any innovation that saves humans time. Anything you do has an opportunity cost in that you are not doing something else. Eliminating some of that cost doesn’t make you lazy, but it creates time and space for you to either do something else or nothing. At that point, it’s about your character, not product enablement.
As for product makers, I think it’s good if we have idle inclinations because those drive us to improve the world for others.

In Bill’s quote above, notice the lazy person still has to DO a hard job. 😉

I would say no. To me good UX helps a user find a solution to their problem, so something similar to that. However, some UX patterns like never ending Facebook news feed or Netflix autoplay are designed to keep us engaged with the product for as long as possible. So those UX patterns will keep us more engaged and could account for more time than we would like. But, not sure if that is what makes us lazy in the end.
Ive found that good UX makes people more productive, which in turn signals to their bosses that they can handle more work. Productivity and automation has never decreased demand for labor work.
