[Resolved] Lost all progress?

July 22, 2019 at 7:01am (Edited 1 year ago by @rokublac)
Hi! I just coded on my pc and then went on a little trip, so I switched to code on my laptop. When I got back the window was still open in my pc, and now the save is just like how it was before I started coding on my laptop... Did I just lose all progress because the window was open and it autosaved when the tab got opened...? Is there any way to retrieve the previous save?

Hi, there!
Is this in the context of saving your notes in someone else's casts or are you working in your own Scrimba cast?
Could you please provide a link to the cast?

It's my own playground thing, it's the first time I'm trying to make a website (by learning from one of your courses...) I had done a lot more stuff 😂 including changing the entire colour scheme so it's easy to notice that it's the old one... https://scrimba.com/c/cemwLBUL

I tried to do the same thing in reverse- going on my laptop with the tab still open there, but it just showed the old one too... I have a screencap of what it looked like before (kinda): https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/206123008501350401/602169021730914334/unknown.png I'm mostly doing this to mess around and learn but I'm still a bit sad if it's lost since I'm pretty sure I can't find whatever I did again... 😂

Just clarifying the situation - so you started the playground on your PC and then later you switched to a laptop where you then continued working on the same playground?
If you're accessing the same playground with the same account on a different device, you would essentially be controlling the same work space in real time. So regardless of which device you're on, any changes should be reflected on both devices immediately.
Did you fork or clone the original playground? Not too sure why it would revert back to an older state since you said you were coding and executing the code in the playground while you were on your trip. Quite strange...

Yup! I did clone it once to check out something else without messing up the original (on the pc), but that didnt pan out so I abandoned that clone... I've checked it just to be sure & nope this and the green one is the same one. I'm also so confused why it went back to the brown one... It does appear to have some changes I made on the laptop, which is even more confusing (like the menu symbol changing on hover was definetely done on the laptop), so it's just erased the last few hours...

Sorry to hear about the loss of work. Definitely an odd behavior, especially when you say that it still shows some of your recent changes...
When you first noticed that it reverted back to an older version (when you went and saw your PC), was your browser still active with Scrimba on your laptop?

It was in sleeping mode, so I'm not sure if that counts as active... But the tab was still up yes (I never close tabs...) Luckily if it's only the last bit I only need to do some minor stuff to get it back on track, but it's going to be hard to remember to close tabs in the future 😅

Yes, not very user friendly if that is so!
The only thing I could think of is that you accidentally signed out your account while you were on your laptop at some point, which then stopped your changes to be in sync since you're not on the same account anymore. That's the closest I could get to recreating this issue.

Unfortunately no, I've been logged in the entire time... I ran into the issue again-- while I went to other tabs for a while, I came back and it updated only to reverse some changes I had made (just a few though). I didn't even change computers that time but the tab was still open in my sleeping PC, so I'm guessing it got confused... I didn't have any of these problems before when I only used the PC, so it's probably the tabs 🤔

Hmm, yes, it does seem to be a tab issue. I will open an issue for you on our GitHub issues page to investigate on it further with the dev team. For now, just to be safe, try and reduce the load from simultaneous use of Scrimba from the same account, especially when on different devices. If you're jumping from different devices, try to exit Scrimba when you can so it is only open on one device (in the context of using the same account that is).
Not the greatest solution, but hopefully it reduces the risk of this issue popping up again while this problem is being investigated.

Are you referring to when you edit the teachers code in the cast? Make sure you click the green tick to save your code edit (note). If not, it will notify you to save before downloading.
