Saving opentype features in text styles

January 11, 2019 at 10:37am

I'm working with the really nice font Raleway and it has a bunch of Opentype features that really changes the personality of the text. I'm turning on Lining Figures and both Stylistics Sets. They don't get saved into Sketch's text styles. Every time I make a new text layer I have to do it all over again.

Any suggestions on making this less painful?

Hey Aen I looked into this a bit more by looking at some of the properties stored on Text Styles and as you know, Text Styles currently don’t save any OpenType features. I sent a message to the Sketch team about it but haven’t heard back from them. Currently, I would recommend using symbols to help make it a bit less painful. (I also looked into making a plugin to support it but isn’t straightforward and would be better handled if Sketch natively supported it)

@kev I just learned about your plugin under development, betterTypePanel, from the Sketch newsletter. Please keep up the great work! My team needs tabular numbers for one of our apps. Our devs are able to implement this easily through OpenType, but in order to get our Sketch files to reliably use them (and to work in styles), we resorted to creating a custom version of the font that forces all numbers to be tabular. It's a total hack, and I'd love to be able to deploy your plugin once it's considered stable enough—or for Bohemian to build this right into Sketch!

For those who don't know about Kevin's plugin, check it out here: https://github.com/KevinGutowski/betterTypePanel

Thanks for the words of encouragement! I’ll add text style support as a stretch goal (kinda hoping that Sketch will change how those work so they just work for free rather than me trying to hack it together)

Thanks for the request. Improvements on this area are definitely on our radar, and I’ve added a note about OpenType features and styles to the discussion. Keep the ideas coming, we may not always respond (not enough hours in the day!) but we’re always listening 🙌
