It's interesting seeing this trend of saying "Hi I'm so and so and I do this". What are peoples thoughts on this? I remember 5 or 6 years ago this was becoming a really big trend and there was some write ups about how silly it is to say this sort of thing in your portfolio. I believe the assumption that this opinion was based on was that if someone is coming to your portfolio then they know who you are and what you do.

What do others think of this trend?

Hm - i don't mind it as long as it's not super fluffy or hyperbolic. I think it should say something about the person, and not be too generic like "I build delightful experiences"

I'd say a lot of the times portfolios are being seen for the first time by a recruiter or hiring manager and might not have any context on the person, so whatever personality comes through might be helpful

I think providing it reflects your personality then great, your portfolio is an extension of yourself so should have personality in it, it doesn't have to be super original but also if a recruiter/hiring manager see's 5 portfolios that all say 'Hi I'm X, I make great Y' from the off what makes you stand out. I've struggled in the past trying to find a method that best describes myself, right now my portfolio has my name and profession then in the background it rotates through snippets from the TMNT theme, does it work? I don't know.

Great points, honestly. I've never had a strong opinion either way, but recently I was sitting with a friend talking and going over some portfolio design work. During that time I pulled up the portfolio I've been working on for my girlfriend and asked my friend what he thought the website was about. His first reaction was that it was a photographers website, which is interesting because she's a 3d artist not photographer. So calling how who you are, what you do, and displaying a little bit of personality seems like it can be super important. But I agree, you have to do it in a subtle way and not in a way that seems fluffy.
