Welcome to Spectrum, Slack team! Start here!

Glad to finally have you all here!
What questions do you have?
What's bad?
What's good?
What do you want us to do?
Keep in mind everything here was built in just a few months by 3 people and we have a long way to go - but we're moving super fast and we'll get there sooner rather than later.

Did all of the slack channels make the jump?
We actually didn't import channels. We built out the set of channels here as people on this platform needed them since they're fundamentally pretty different. If you want some more channels, let us know!

So far, so good, Bryn! If we do run into issues is there a support channel or chat?

spectrum.chat/spectrum has a few channels around support of different types - definitely join!
of course that wouldn't link

First time using this, loving the aesthetics + interactions. I'm hung up on understanding the purpose of this product, it feels like a mix of Twitter/Facebook Groups/Chat. Maybe it's just me but it seems like there's a lot of overlap/duplication in content.

Good questions! There definitely will be, but we think it'll be divided by groups of people in such a way that there can be different biases and intent that are provided for by the separation.

e.g. a question here like... "what's a good CMS for a client?" might be duplicated somewhere else, but the group of people may change the answers in a way that's better for you. If you ask in /React, you might get Nextein. Here, you might get a recommendation for CraftCMS. In /Webflow, you might get a method to use webflow with a CMS, etc etc.

what was wrong with slack?

A lot: rolling 10,000 message limit on a team of 9,000 is tough, not to mention 5gb total upload limit, we kept hearing that other communities stopped being able to invite new members after 8-9,000, the conversations were constantly interrupted, new accounts for every single community with individual notification settings, DMs, etc.

our solution certainly isn't perfect yet, but we're improving it as fast as possible.

Yeah I'm also missing the dedicated app even though this is built really well. Be interesting to see how you handle notifications moving forward. This was ( with customisation ) something Slack was very good at. Seriously though great work and congratulations on rolling this out so quick, it's a real achievement :tada:

Just want to say, nice job! I haven't delved in yet but it looks good so far. I can't remember the last time I was active on a forum, but I'll try not to be a lurker :)

The freeCodeCamp folks did the same move earlier on. They documented the experience here: https://medium.freecodecamp.org/so-yeah-we-tried-slack-and-we-deeply-regretted-it-391bcc714c81

pretty much similar with slack.

Love this. I think it combines the best features of Slack and the best features of something like Facebook Groups!
