Feedback please! WorkFlowy theme

July 20, 2017 at 5:21pm (Edited 5 years ago)
Hey all,
I've been tinkering on this side project for a while – designing a skin for WorkFlowy, the outlining/list-making/todo app, via a Chrome Extension. I've been a user for 4+ years and it's the most-used app on my Mac. The nested list format makes it perfect for organising all my todos, notes and writing.
The existing web app hasn't changed visually in all the time I've been using it. With daily use, I was finding the UI wrapper to be distracting and the type hard to read.
Paperback is designed to give a more focused UI for experienced WorkFlowy users. I've made lots of tweaks to typography, spacing and color, and stripped back much of the old UI to put all focus on the user's content.

I'm seeking feedback on:

Visual design – spacing, hierarchy, icons, type etc.
  • Paperback – what do you think?
For the Chrome store:
  • Paperback
  • Paperback – WorkFlowy modernised
  • Paperback – A minimal WorkFlowy theme
Your thoughts having used it (if you've installed the Chrome Extension Alpha)
Let me know what you think!

dude love it. hadn't used workflowy before and it maps so well to how I think. your skin makes it so much prettier. I'll try to remember to come back and give some feedback after I get a little use out of it
would personally go for "Paperback – A minimal WorkFlowy theme" as the title, I think the more obvious the better. nothing gained by being vague I don't think
small ui detail, noticed the expand and collapse icons next to the bullet points aren't quite vertically centered
Cheers Taylor! You make a good point with the name, and yep, the expand/collapse icons are on my list of things to fix :)

This is so great! Haven't heard of workflowy before but I will give it a try now with your theme.
Cheers Gabriel. Let me know how you get on!

Ooh this looks really nice! I also haven't used Workflowy so I don't have too much context but here's some feedback just from taking a look at the screenshots you shared:
1) The button style for change email, change password etc. could be bolder, it's not obvious that they're elements you can interact with. 2) The icon to select a different theme is unclear, also I've rarely seen a popover that appears at the side of the chevron, maybe changing it to a standard down pointing chevron and then placing the popover below it would be better? Other than that it's pretty 💯, really like the "Others can view/edit" toggle!
great feedback. Cheers David
You make a good point about the the theme selector. I think for now I was gonna deactivate it, as all the available themes only work only work with the old UI. Once I have a nice looking alternative theme (dark mode probably) I'll put it back into use!

Sam, been using this for a few weeks now and it's become a huge part of my workflow. New bug seems to have surfaced though, I now get constant Chrome alert popups when the extension is enabled and it makes it unusable
Yikes! Dah my apologies for blocking you from your work. Thank you for calling it out! Was some experimenting that definitely shouldn't have made it into a finished build.
I've just pushed an update that will fix it. Should go through quick but may take up to an hour to be approved by the Chrome store
Thanks again Taylor :)
duuude one of the quickest fixes I've ever seen. you're the man!
hah thanks :) it was one pesky line of JS – gotta be the easiest bug to squash ever!
