Thanks guys, I definitely should learn AE it seems! I do have a Skillshare account so that is a great link, thanks Taylor. I just got introduced to http://www.quartzcodeapp.com by a fellow designer who answered my question which looks interesting but I wonder if that helps make it any easier lol

AE is kinda the standard I feel. There area ton of tutorials for it too which makes it nice to find help on something specific. It sounds like you are also looking to implement the animations in code (not just video) so you might like Lottie https://airbnb.design/introducing-lottie/.

Hey everyone, is there a solid indie competitor to AE, like Affinity Photo is to Photoshop?

not that i know of. there are plenty of alts for premiere, but not for AE :(
