Join us on our new journey
February 9, 2021 at 9:35pmJoin us on our new journey
February 9, 2021 at 9:35pm (Edited 11 months ago)When Spectrum joined GitHub, we committed to building the best community platform for all developers. To move us closer towards this goal, we’re announcing that the time has come for the planned archival of Spectrum in order to focus our efforts on GitHub Discussions.
Starting today, we will no longer support the creation of new communities on Spectrum. Starting on August 24, 2021, we will be maintaining Spectrum as read-only - no 404s or lost internet history.
Why are we doing this now?
GitHub Discussions is built to be the home for your developer community. Many Spectrum communities have already made the transition to GitHub Discussions for a fresh start, citing Discussions as a more reliable and flexible option for their community.
For the first time, your community and your code can exist in the same space, giving people more visibility into how their ideas and discussions influence and improve the products they’re passionate about. This lowers the barrier to grow your community from engaged users to active contributors, and keeps the focus of the community in a single spot, separate from active work happening in GitHub Issues and Pull Requests.
What happens next?
- Starting today, new communities can not be created on Spectrum.
- Spectrum will become read-only on August 24, 2021.
- Check out the GitHub Discussions beta to see if it’s a good fit for your community. Then, tell us what you think.
What will happen if I do nothing?
Your communities will not disappear. After August 10th, Spectrum will remain available in read-only mode and GitHub has made a commitment to keep the content available for the foreseeable future.
A big thank you
Thank you for choosing Spectrum as the home for your community during these past few years. Onwards!

In the meantime, we have introduced a new setting in your community settings page to set up a redirect to a new community URL. That way anyone who lands on the page will know where to go. See https://spectrum.chat/figma as an example.

The Github Discussions home page says GitHub Discussions is a collaborative communication forum for the community around an open source project. which is immediately discouraging for anyone who is just interested in creating a community for tools or other reasons.
Even here in the intro, you say GitHub Discussions is built to be the home for your developer community which sounds like you're dismissing all the design and other communities.
I'm sad to see Spectrum go, would appreciate some clarity about Microsoft's intentions.
Also, fairly urgently, change the Spectrum Support description dropping Spectrum is a community platform for the future.

"For the first time, your community and your code can exist in the same space, giving people more visibility into how their ideas and discussions influence and improve the products they’re passionate about. "
It's pretty tiresome to see shitty changes packaged as best thing ever since sliced bread. What about communities that don't have code to go with them, like Sketch? Yet another case of a good platform selling out and screwing over existing users.

(rafalp) could you email [email protected] and I can help debug or enable the redirect for your community manually?

(yewyewxd) I would recommend not writing pull requests against the Spectrum codebase going forward.

Great

I would be much more comfortable with all of this if the community migrated to bitbucket.org. I was a beta member of both LinkedIn and Slack, and I've watched Microsoft takeover and then co-opt each of those communities. I know that Atlassian isn't pure, but I find bitbucket far preferable to github.
