Is that a fair comparison or am I overlooking something significant about Spectrum. In other words, slack and Gitter seem to fill the needs nicely, why would I try/move to spectrum?

Gitter is single stream chat - one community/group one room/channel, similar to whatsapp or telegram.
Slack is multi-stream chat - one community/group, multiple channels.
So spectrum seem similar to slack but there's some notable differences I can see:-
1. Spectrum is topical - topic is first class and then you can comment on the topic which start a conversation. While in slack, conversation centered around message. While later on they added thread features that allow conversation to branch out for each message, that is not required. So it common to see in slack few people having conversation in a thread and then come next person replying outside of the thread, in the main channel chat stream.
2. Slack community/group is complete silos of each other. They're private, like different planet in the universe. While on spectrum, communities seem like countries on Earth. Some are easily open for anyone to come and go, some are restrictive (private communities) but most of the time you can see all of them by just like looking at the globe on your table.
3. Because of no. 3, public communities on spectrum easily discoverable, even by google. In fact, a topic has a permanent url that you can pass around.

I think point #3 is a huge deal. What makes stack overflow great is that it isn't a silo but indexed in google. So Spectrum could become a huge open repository of shared knowledge. I am now taking drinking the kool aid. : )
