Why did Spectrum stop using tildes in URLs?

August 21, 2019 at 4:40pm (Edited 2 years ago)
Hi Spectrum team!
If I remember correctly, Spectrum used to have tildes in URLs denoting community names, e.g.,
spectrum.chat/~spectrum
(or perhaps it was for channels?)
I know it's been a while, but I'm wondering if there were any technical reasons why you moved away from this? Was it causing any issues with browsers, search engines, etc?

Oops I just noticed you're using tildes for thread IDs... was it always this way? It's possible I'm really misremembering this.
We used to use tildes to denote communities way back when we first launched the beta in 2017
Eventually we simplified it to just be spectrum.chat/spectrum
And yep, now tildes are used in thread urls just for us to have a character we can break urls apart with :P

Awesome thanks!
