Type goes hand in hand with content, so researching and defining content will almost always help me to start thinking about it

I'm also curious about that. I mean, isn't there any web tool that filters type by "personality" or "industry"?

I mean, filtering by industry wouldn't be so relevant, I guess. But filtering type by personality would help sooooo much.

I'm just getting into how to apply typography and it's a lot for beginners.

My process is usually to think about the context and mood, the what meaning I am trying to convey, to inform my decision about what typography, typeface etc to go for. Then, to go a little further to find ones that are less common with interesting stylistic alternates.
