Diversity is Punk Rock

July 25, 2017 at 4:11pm

I wrote a few thoughts about the making of Vectors Conference and tried to draw a parallel with an empowering movement like Punk Rock in an attempt to de-victimize minorities and convey an idea larger than any company or event. Would love your thoughts!

I appreciate the metaphor but i think it could be explored a bit deeper. It could be missing the point but perhaps highlighting ways that the early days of punk and hardcore also foregrounded inclusivity might be interesting. Stories of bands with non-white male members could help push the comparison - acts like The Slits, The Raincoats, Bad Brains, etc. Even ESG would be a cool example of how wide the scene's breadth reached.

But, then again, this is an article about a design conference after all, not a music history lesson 😁

Thanks Roby! Yeah I definitely worried that the punk examples were all-white male band members. However, the analogy was not meant to be taken literally (in spite of a few exceptions, punk is not a very diverse bunch) but I wanted to connect the *spirit* of punk rock to that of diversity - question everything and disrupt the status quo. I feel like we talk a lot about the moral imperatives of including diverse folks (which is probably the most important) but perhaps not so much about the ideology behind it.

I have not yet read your work, but afro-punk and punk in other countries might be an opportunity to expand the diversity.

Totally! I have only became familiar with afro-punk recently and am a big fan!
